Europe’s rail network is extensive and well-connected, taking you right to the heart of cities and towns. Its connectivity also lets you travel effortlessly from one destination to the next while meeting locals and like-minded travelers along the way.
Depending on your travel goals, you can customize your travel, by choosing between tickets that give you access to the trains for as short as 4 days to as long as 3 months. The trains also offer two kinds of seating – first and second class for a a luxury or value experience respectively.
It is important to select the right Interrail pass to make your European adventure more enjoyable. Your choice will depend on factors like your nationality, travel goals, schedule, and budget. Here’s a simple guide to help you decide:

Decide which countries and cities you want to explore and identify the trains that can take you there. If you’re planning more than five major routes, an Interrail Pass is your most convenient and cost-effective option. Use the Interrail map to help plan your route across up to 33 European countries.
Once you have mapped out your itinerary, choose the Interrail Pass that best suits your journey. Decide how many travel days you need and pick between a Flexi Pass (non-consecutive days) or a Continuous Pass (consecutive days).
You don’t need exact travel dates upfront – your Interrail Pass is valid for 11 months from the date of purchase. And if your plans change, you can cancel easily for a full refund.
Keep in mind that some seat reservations are not included in your pass and the fee depends on the train and the route. These need to be booked separately, for example, high-speed trains may cost around €10–15, while night trains may be €20 (as it may include sleeper costs as well). You can use the official website to identify and book these additional trains. Use our Interrail seat reservation guide for step-by-step instructions.

Here's an example of a scenic Interrail route that requires no reservations. Start in the Netherlands and travel to Cologne, then follow the Rhine River through Koblenz to Basel. From there, take the Bernina Railway from Chur to Tirano in Italy, enjoying stunning views of Lake Como along the way. After this, you can continue your journey by taking a night train from Milan to Sicily, including a ride on the last European train ferry. Alternatively, explore Venice and Slovenia (Bohinj/Ljubljana), visit Cinque Terre and Florence, and conclude your trip in Nice and the French Riviera.
When planning an Interrailing trip, timing depends on the experience you seek. Summer is ideal for exploring cities and enjoying outdoor activities, though it tends to be more expensive due to higher accommodation and reservation costs. Winter offers a quieter and more scenic experience, with cities showcasing unique winter traditions, making it a magical time for travel. Winter also typically falls outside of the peak travel season.
Yes, the 90-day Global Pass is worth it for long trips across Europe. It is often more cost-effective than buying individual tickets for each journey. However, you’ll need to plan your itinerary carefully to get the most out of the pass and maximize its value.
The Rail Planner App will indicate whether seat reservations are required for specific trains. Look for the "Reservation Required" symbol in the app to see if a reservation is needed for your journey.
If your seat reservation through the app doesn’t go through, you can always book directly with the individual train operators or services. However, the app is generally reliable, so there’s no need to worry in most cases.
