This is an extra ticket you book along with your regular train ticket. It locks in your spot on a specific train at a set date and time. Unlike most Swiss trains where you can just hop on and grab any open seat, the Glacier Express requires reservations. This ensures every passenger has a guaranteed seat to enjoy the stunning views and special services on this iconic panoramic train.
The cost of your Glacier Express journey consists of two parts: the ticket fare and the reservation fee.
Glacier Express ticket prices depend on the route and class you choose, ranging from CHF 40 for a 2nd class ticket to CHF 272 for an Excellence class seat. Prices vary based on your travel distance and preferred class of service.
Tip: If you have a Swiss Travel Pass, you can travel on the Glacier Express for free—just pay for the mandatory seat reservation.
Children under 6 years old can travel free without a seat, while those aged 6-16 years have to pay half fare but full reservation fee. However, Junior Card holders under 16 years can travel free when accompanied by a parent.
The direction of travel for carriages is not predetermined. For groups, booking opposite seats is recommended.
Reservations for the dish of the day or 3-course menu are mandatory and can be made up to one day before travel.
The Glacier Express accommodates accessibility needs with wheelchair compartments and accessible restrooms in 1st class. Wheelchair users must reserve seats through Glacier Express Central Reservations, while those transferring to seats can book normally. Train staff provide boarding assistance with mobile lifts, and Swiss disabled travelers may have a free companion or guide dog. Check the official website for wheelchair size and weight limits.
Dogs are not permitted on the Glacier Express due to hygiene rules related to onboard catering. However, service dogs on an official assignment are allowed.
Glacier Express tickets can be refunded under specific conditions, with a fee applied. Electronic tickets are refundable per T600.9, and claims must be submitted online with the ticket or order number. Refunds for seat reservations are generally not allowed, except in cases of illness, accident, or death, with supporting documents required. Refunds can also be processed at the station in mobile or printed form.
