Your Guide to Glacier Express Reservations & Scenic Routes

As you plan your journey on the Glacier Express—a dreamy experience through the Swiss Alps—understanding the reservation process is immensely important for a smooth and enjoyable trip.

While the train runs throughout the year from summer (generally from May to October) to winter (December to May), it remains out of service during autumn (from October to December). Renowned for its spectacular views and premium service, an advanced booking is a prerequisite to guarantee an unforgettable experience on this exceptional route.

What is a seat reservation?

Interior of Glacier Express, Switzerland

This is an extra ticket you book along with your regular train ticket. It locks in your spot on a specific train at a set date and time. Unlike most Swiss trains where you can just hop on and grab any open seat, the Glacier Express requires reservations. This ensures every passenger has a guaranteed seat to enjoy the stunning views and special services on this iconic panoramic train.

Things to know before making your reservation

  • If you have a Eurail, Interral, or Swiss Travel Pass, you just need to make your seat reservation. You don't need to buy tickets separately.
  • Always make your seat reservation first before purchasing a separate ticket.
  • Please note that some of the Glacier Express tickets include reservations, and a separate reservation is not required.
  • If you are planning for a one-time experience of Glacier Express, it is recommended that you purchase the Glacier Express one-way ticket instead of a rail pass with a longer validity.
  • Ensure that the class of your ticket or pass matches the class of your seat reservation to avoid last-minute inconveniences.
  • If you are a couple traveling together, we advise you to refer to the seat map and book face-to-face seats by the window.
