Brief history of Glacier Express

  • 1903: The Albula Line, part of the Glacier Express route, is completed, offering stunning views of the Swiss Alps and becoming a key feature of the journey.
  • 1930: The Glacier Express begins its journey, connecting the Swiss towns of Zermatt and St. Moritz. It was initially designed as a luxury scenic train for tourists wanting to experience the Swiss Alps.
  • 1980s: The tilting glass was created to stop drinks from spilling on inclines or curves. Originally used as regular tableware, it became iconic, with train guards telling passengers to “Turn the glasses” when their drinks tilted. Today, the glass is available as a souvenir.
  • 1982: The Furka Base Tunnel opens, shortening travel time on the Glacier Express by bypassing the previously challenging Furka Pass.
  • 1993: The Glacier Express introduces its first carriages with panoramic windows, elevating the travel experience.
  • 2005: The Glacier Express marks its 75th anniversary, while the company plans for future growth. To maintain high standards, it orders 24 new panoramic cars to serve all travel classes.
  • 2006: All Glacier Express carriages are updated with a new, distinctive livery featuring the tilted Swiss cross, giving the trains a fresh and recognizable look.
  • 2008: The Albula and Bernina Lines, which pass through the stunning mountains of Graubünden and extend into Italy, are included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Rhaetian Railway in the Albula/Bernina Landscapes.”
  • 2019: The Excellence class is launched.
  • 2021: The interior refurbishment of the 1st and 2nd class carriages is completed, enhancing the comfort and style of the Glacier Express.
