Bernina Express tips

  • Arrive 20 to 30 minutes early to secure space inside for your luggage on the Bernina Express, as storage is limited.
  • In winter, it gets dark early, so hop on an early Bernina Express train to enjoy the final stretch of the northbound route in daylight.
  • The Bernina Express's peak season runs from May 1 to October 31, 2025. For a quieter experience, consider booking tickets outside this period.
  • If you're connecting to the Bernina Express from other routes, make sure you have enough time for any transfers, as connections can sometimes have tight windows.
  • In peak season, the Bernina Express can get crowded in the late morning (around 11am to 12pm). Traveling earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon may offer a more relaxed experience.

Frequently Asked Questions about Bernina Express timetable

Does the timetable change during different seasons?

Yes, the schedule changes between summer and winter. There are usually more trains in summer when it’s busier, and fewer in winter. Check the timetable before your trip.

How do I coordinate connections with regional trains or buses?

The Swiss train system is super reliable, so it’s easy to connect. Use the SBB app or website to plan your route. Give yourself at least 10–15 minutes between connections just to be safe.

Are there specific times when the panoramic cars are more likely to be available?

Panoramic cars are always available, but they’re most popular midday, on weekends, and during holidays. Book early to make sure you get a seat, especially near the window.

Can I board the Bernina Express at intermediate stations?

Yes, you can hop on at stops like Pontresina or Poschiavo as long as you have a reservation for the panoramic car.

How do stop durations vary across stations, and can I get off briefly?

Stops are usually super short, like 1 to 5 minutes. You won’t have time to get off and explore, but you can use regional trains if you want more flexibility.

Are there early morning or late evening trains for connecting itineraries?

The Bernina Express runs during the day for the views, but regional trains run early in the morning and late at night. They’re great for connections if the Bernina schedule doesn’t work for you.
