What is the Bernina Express?

The Bernina Express is a scenic train that runs through the Swiss Alps, beginning its journey from Chur in Switzerland to Tirano in Italy. Marvel at the wild beauty of the Alpine landscape on this train ride, widely considered one of the most breathtaking experiences in the world. From your panoramic window, you’ll see icy glaciers, emerald valleys, and glittering lakes as the train passes through 55 tunnels and crosses 196 bridges.

Bernina Express Route Map

Bernina Express: At a glance

  • The Bernina Express train ride spans over 144 km (89 miles), and most of the journey is on the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Rhaetian Railway.
  • The journey between Chur and Tirano is roughly 4 hours long. If you’d prefer a shorter experience, you can catch the train at St. Moritz and enjoy a 2.5-hour scenic ride to Tirano.
  • In the summer, two trains run between Chur and Tirano, and three between St. Moritz and Tirano. One train runs between Chur and Tirano in the winter. The one winter train between St. Mortiz and Tirano does not run daily during non-peak weeks.
  • While the incredible high-alpine and Mediterranean landscapes are the most exciting part of this train ride, the Bernina Express route is an astonishing feat of railway engineering and a marvel in itself.
  • The full route, running from Chur to Tirano, consists of two famous rail lines, the Albula Line and the Bernina Line.
  • The Albula Line runs from Thusis to St. Moritz and includes one of the most famous sights of the Bernina Route: the Landwasser Viaduct, which tightly curves over the Landwasser Valley and plunges straight into a tunnel.
  • Along the Bernina Line, which runs from St. Mortiz to Tirano, you’ll see sights like Val Poschiavo and the popular Bursio Spiral Viaduct north of the Swiss/Italian border.
  • You can also travel the Bernina Express route via regional trains, colloquially known as the Bernina Red Trains or Red trains.
  • If you’d like to spend a few days exploring the sights along the Bernina Line, board a Red train from Chur. These regional trains stop at plenty of small towns and villages along the Bernina Line, including Alp Grüm, Le Prese, Pontresina, Bergün, Filisur, and more.

There are two types of trains running along the Albula and Bernina Lines: The Bernina Express (panoramic train) and the Bernina Red Train (regular non-panoramic train). Here are the key differences between the two trains.

Bernina Express

Crossing the Alps in the Bernina Express is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The wide panoramic windows on this train offer an immersive experience, making you feel like you’re one with the landscape. You can also listen to the onboard audio guide as you ride past lush valleys, azure lakes, and high mountain passes. However, it might be harder to get tickets as these trains are in high demand and have limited availability and fewer departure times.

The Bernina Express panoramic train isn’t the only way you can cross the Swiss Alps. There are regional trains, called the Bernina Red Trains, that run on the same railway lines as the Bernina Express, offering you similar views at an increased frequency and affordable rates. If you can’t find tickets for the Bernina Express, worry not! You can always hop on a Red Train to see the alpine sights.

  • Avoiding crowds as the regional trains run many times in one day and have plenty of seats to spare, especially during non-peak months.

Seat reservation for the Bernina Express panoramic train

  • A valid train ticket isn’t all you need to hop on the Bernina Express. To secure your seat on the train, you will also need to pay an additional fee towards seat reservation.
  • Seat reservations are mandatory and must be paid for per person, regardless of which class of coach you are traveling in. You can purchase your seat reservations here.
  • Depending on your route, seat reservation charges can vary between CHF 28 to CHF 36. Seat reservations are high in demand and can sell out pretty quickly. So we recommend booking your seats in advance, although sometimes last-minute bookings may be available.
  • Children under 6 years of age can travel for free, provided they do not occupy a separate seat. If they require a seat, you will have to pay the full seat reservation charge for that seat. Carry their ID with you and display them at the boarding point.

Choose 1st or 2nd class seats

Both first and second class on the Bernina Express have air-conditioned coaches with sealed panoramic windows that reach the ceiling. Passengers can also access free Wi-Fi, power outlets, and the InfoT(r)ainment app which provides route information and live maps for the journey. The Bernina Express mini bar also offers snacks and beverages to passengers, provided you pay out of pocket.

However, there are a few differences between the two classes you should consider before booking tickets.

First class leather seats on a Bernina Express

First class seats

With only three seats in a row (two on one side of the aisle and one on the other), the first-class coaches offer plenty of aisle space and legroom for passengers to move about freely. If you’re looking for a luxurious experience with wide leather seats and a quieter atmosphere, first-class seats might be the ideal option for you. However, keep in mind that, on average, the Bernina Express only has about 58 seats in first class, so you will have fewer options to choose from.

Second class seats

Second-class coaches aboard the Bernina Express have four seats in a row (two on each side of the aisle), with 180 to 280 seats to select from on average. If you’re looking for an economical experience offering standard comfort and a vibrant atmosphere from which to enjoy the alpine scenery, then book your second-class tickets right away.

Bernina Express with rail passes

If you’re traveling with any of the following rail passes, you might get free or discounted tickets to the regional Red trains and the Bernina Express (including the bus ride to Lugano).*

  • Swiss Travel Pass: The Swiss Travel Pass (Continuous & Flexible Pass) gives you unlimited access to Switzerland’s public transport network, including trains, buses, boats, and, in some cases, panoramic trains. Your tickets for the Bernina Express as well as the Bernina Red trains will be free if you already have a Swiss Travel Pass.
  • Eurail Pass: A Eurail Pass grants non-European residents free access to the rail networks in 33 European countries. With a Eurail Pass, you don’t have to pay for your Bernina Express tickets or your regional Red train tickets.
  • Interrail Switzerland Pass: Providing European residents with unlimited access to Switzerland’s national rail network, the Interrail Switzerland Pass also grants you free tickets on the regional trains and on the Bernina Express.
  • Swiss Half-Fare Card: With the Swiss Half-Fare Card you get 50% discounted access to the Swiss public transportation network. So when you book your tickets aboard the Bernina Express or the Bernina Red Train, you only have to pay half the ticket price.

*Seat reservations for panoramic trains are exempt from any rail pass-related discounts and must be purchased separately.

The Bernina Express bus from Tirano to Lugano

Bus Interior

  • The bus ride is three hours and travels along the shores of Lake Como and Lake Lugano, with plenty of charming Italian villages dotting the horizon.
  • Seat reservations for this bus ride are mandatory, and separate from the seat reservations made for the panoramic train ride. Depending on the time of reservation, it can cost you between CHF 14 to CHF 16.
  • Your ride comes to an end at Lugano, the Italian-speaking city in Southern Switzerland, known for its sunny disposition and mix of Swiss-Mediterranean cultures.

Visitor tips to make the most of your Alpine journey

  • Reserve your seats as early as possible for both the panoramic train and the bus. Seat reservations sell out quickly, so keep your eyes peeled for when they open.
  • Regional trains do not have seat reservations, so your best chance to see great views is to arrive early at the station and quickly snag a seat.
  • To see the highlights of the journey, like the Landwasser Viaduct and the Brusio Circular Viaduct, sit on the right side of the train when heading south, and on the left side when heading north.
  • Grab a seat at the back end of the train so you can see the carriages in the front curve along ravines and plunge into tunnels.
  • When traveling by Red trains, choose second-class carriages with windows that open, if you want to take the best pictures.
  • Opt for an open carriage when the weather is warm.
  • Buy a guidebook when traveling on regional trains so you don’t miss any of the popular sights along the journey.
  • Pack some munchies and drinks with you for the ride. You’re bound to get hungry.
